Book Description

The Thunder of My Name is the story of Billy Depestre who engages life with a persisting premonition of impending doom. He is a fighter by nature and has no intention of lying down to be crushed by whatever is to come. Meanwhile, the Caribbean island is emblazened with the spirit of Independence that serves to fire and inform Billy’s attitudes and strengthens his courage to move to his own commands. Out of the stubborness of infancy, the aggressive rebelliousness and divergent posture of teenage years, comes Billy Depestre resolute that all shall feel the weight of his history and hear the thunder of his name… This fictional work explores a plausible narrative and nurturing background of a Black Caribbean student destined to confront institutional racism at a Canadian University in the late 1960s. It speaks to the reasons for the different reaction of those students who went to Canada in the late 1960s as opposed to the reaction of those who went before. The story of Billy Depestre could be the story of any of the forty-two Black Caribbean students who stood up at Sir George in 1969.
