Jamaican Society and High Schooling presents a new theory of society, Theory of Place, as the basis for interpreting the sociological data collected on high school students and teachers. It is an attempt by a Caribbean academic to develop grand-design theoretical instruments out of the Ca ibbean experience that are applicable universally. In this regard, the book reflects the desire of Caribbean scholars to be creative and original.Errol Miller gives a new interpretation of the creation of secondary education since 1879 in Jamaica in relation to the changing status of the different racial groups and conflict among them in the latter half of the 19th century. This study's account of the evolution of this educational institution over the last 100 years is probably unique as it provides social background data on high school students and teachers in the post-war period. Data were gathered from the records of the 26 grant-aided high, schools that have operated continuously since 1940. Information was gathered about 14,974 students.
