話說晉獻公既并虞、虢二國，群臣皆賀。惟驪姬心中不樂。他本意欲遣世子申生伐虢，卻被里克代行，又一舉成功，一時間無題目可做。乃复与优施相儀，言：“里克乃申生之党，功高位重，我無以敵之，奈何？”优施曰：“荀息以一璧、馬，滅虞、虢二國，其智在里克之上，其功亦不在里克之下。若求荀息為奚齊卓子之傅，則可以敵里克有余矣。”驪姬請于獻公，遂使荀息傅奚齊卓子。驪姬又謂优施曰：“荀息已入我党矣。里克在朝，必破我謀，何花E可以去之？克去而申生乃可圖也。”优施曰：“里克為人，外強而中多顧慮。誠以利害動之，彼必持兩端，然后可收而為我用。克好飲，夫人能為我具特羊之饗，我因侍飲而以言探之。其入，則夫人之福也；即不入，我优人亦聊与為戲，何罪焉？”驪姬曰：“善。”乃代為优施治飲具。
